Summer Demo Photos and a Look Ahead to Fall!

A month ago, our Kung Fu community celebrated the end of summer and our students’ progress in the park. Here are some highlight photos!

The fall session has started, and we have more variety in student progress now than ever before. From staff to tiger, our students are taking on quite a challenge.

Now is a great time to join our school if you or a loved one have been thinking of taking up martial arts. Come try out our unique approach that values self-expression, acceptance, and compassion.

Announcing This Year’s Summer Promotion Demo 2024! New Updates Ahead!

Lookout! 2024's Summer Demo is Here!

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at our LGBTQIA+ workshop on Saturday! Don’t forget to register and tell your friends, and we’ll see you all very soon.

Moving on to our big summer announcement! Those of you who have been with our school for more than a year will remember that our summer’s promotion day is a little more special than the others. During this time, we all get together in the beautiful Portland outdoors for a day of fun and celebration. Well, guess what? This year we’re planning something even bigger.

With our growing community, we needed a new park! And now that we have more advanced students, we’re also going to be hosting some performances. Look forward to showcasing what you’ve all learned with your peers and families, and seeing how far other students have come. Even Si Gong is planning a form!

The promotion demo will include all classes at the same time. We will open the class much like we always do, then head into performances, our annual obstacle course, games, and promotions!

This year, we’re also including a potluck picnic for after the event for us all to enjoy together. Please bring something to share if you can!

Mark your calendars for August 24th
at 10 AM – roughly 12:30 PM

Families are welcome! Come watch your student showcase their skills.
Please make sure shoes have some kind of straps to prevent them falling off during the obstacle course. (no flip flops please!)
We request that students wear their belts to both make promotions and certain games go more smoothly.

Keep Kids Moving This Summer In Our Hot New Kung Fu Session – Join Now

We're off to a great start with our summer kung fu session!

The days are getting longer, and the light is staying later at our Kung Fu studio in NE Portland. Our adult classes no longer start in the dark! As we all get ready for a summer full of camping, hiking, and sunbathing, don’t forget to get your Kung Fu in too!

Last session we were elated to see a full class promotion in our Peaceful Warriors class. Great job everyone! Spring time was truly a time for growth for us and our students, and we can’t wait to keep that train rolling. We welcome any new students who would like to give classes a try! Whether you’re an adult, teen, or kid, we have space in our classes for you.

Don’t forget about our free LGBTQIA+ workshop this month on June 22nd, and keep an eye out for some exciting news about our annual summer demo coming soon!

Sunshine Kickstarts New Spring Kung Fu Session ’24

Welcome to the 2024 Spring Kung Fu session!

Welcome back sunshine! It’s springtime in Portland, and it seems the whole town is out enjoying the sunshine after a chilly winter. We had our first 70-degree weekend on the first day of our kung fu spring session a few days ago!

We had several promotions last session (Si Mo included! Wow!) and want to congratulate you all on some hard work! Check out some of our class photos below.

Some of our classes have really blossomed over the last few months, but we still have some availability in our Girl Power and our teen class, so if you know anybody interested, let them know!

Well wishes to all our Kung Fu friends and family. We hope your holiday season is full of joy and rest with your loved ones. We are excited to see what 2024 brings us!

On that note, please review the following cancellations for the end of the year classes:

Adults:

12/27/23 – No Class

Kids/Teens:

12/23/23 – No Classes
12/30/23 – No Classes

We will return with the adult classes on January 3rd and kids and teens will return on January 6th. See you all in the new year!

Winter Kung Fu Session 2024 Brings Exciting New Promotions And Surprises!

Winter Session Brings in the New Year 2024!

The end of last session was exciting to say the least. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it for our very memorable Kung Fu promotion day. Congratulations to all of our students who worked so hard to earn their promotions. There’s some exciting new colored belts in our midst!

For those of you who were here over Thanksgiving week, you might have been able to meet our special guest–none other than Si Gong Robert Firestine! After our students got a chance to meet him, he surprised us with a promotion for our teacher too, to seventh-degree black belt. Congratulations to our new Si Gong Matthew and Si Tai Gong Robert!

Next up is our winter session which will last from early December 2023 through the first weekend of March 2024. Now is the perfect time to begin classes if you know of a student of any age who is interested in starting their journey! Our teens and adults have some exciting new forms to learn this term, and kids will be moving through their focuses as always.

End of Fall Kung Fu Classes Announcements

We’re so grateful for our Shaolin community. Thank you to everyone who has come to classes this last year and shared your experiences and perspectives with us. It’s an honor working with our local community, learning to be our best selves alongside you! We look forward to another year of Kung fu with you all.

There will be no classes next week to allow for families to have more time together. No adult class on 11/22/23 and no kids’ classes on 11/25/23. However, please keep an eye on your emails for info about some special community events this week.

In observance of a number of spiritual and cultural practices centered around this time of year, we spent some time in class giving gratitude to those who are no longer with us, but without whom the Portland Kung Fu school would not exist. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Fall Session Begins August 26

Despite the heat here in Portland, fall is still swiftly approaching. Now is the perfect time to settle into the changing of the seasons and dedicate ourselves to our goals. Our fall session begins on August 26th for our kids and teens, and we look forward to seeing our community continue on as our days begin to cool.

As always, the adult class is ongoing and is always open to new students. The first class is free to try for all ages. Send us an email if interested!
